What Are Backlinks and Why Are They Important

Jackie Lee asked:

Everyone wants traffic to their website. However, most people don’t know what it takes to get traffic. It’s a simple process, contrary to what the gurus will tell you. All you have to do is find good keywords, write quality content based on those keywords and then build backlinks to that content.

This is where most people drop the ball. They think if they write it people will come. This just isn’t true. What makes your content any better than the next guy’s What makes Google or any other search engine chooses to show your site in the search engine results as opposed to your neighbor’s

The answer is links. The number of people, places, sites that are linking to your content is what makes the difference between whether your site shows up in the search engine results or someone else’s. Now you just need to know what backlinks are and how to get them.

The first question is very simple, and what I will be dealing with in this article. Backlinks, simply put, are links pointing back to your site or a page on your site. Backlinks can happen in any number of ways. You can write something amazing other people like and want to tell people about and they link to you. You can take the process in your own hands and send out articles or make comments on blogs. There are of course, differing degrees of value between backlinks.

Google counts all the backlinks you have to your site. Some links it gives more weight to, others it gives less to. You will be wise to take on a link building strategy that involves both quality and quantity because both are important. You want to get backlinks from high page rank sites, Google likes these and gives you a little more credit for them. You also want to get links from directories, and other quantity type places. Although Google doesn’t give you as much credit for these you certainly get credit for having a lot of backlinks to your site.

The best possible backlink you can get is one where you have your chosen keyword in the anchor text of the link. This means if you had words in a sentence that someone could click on to go somewhere else, these would be your keywords. This is important because you are trying to rank in the search engine for specific keywords. Each time you have a link with a certain keyword or some derivation of it, you get credit. So never, never, write a link and have the words you click on be “click here” that’s a ridiculous waste of a backlink, unless, of course you are linking to someone you don’t want to give a backlink to.

You can link within your own site, from free places like squidoo and hubpages. There are a million places to get backlinks to your site. It can be the most boring part of online marketing, but if you don’t do it you will never find yourself number one in google and getting all that traffic.

Should be SEO Consultant Than Rankings

Posted on March 17th, 2009 in SEO | Comments Off

SEO
Sonu Seo asked:

Maybe one of the biggest misconceptions in SEO is that the ranking at Google and Yahoo is all that matters in the search engine optimization. Potential clients come to Seo Services with a single goal: “Get me a top-ten ranking on Google.” Some will also mention MSN, and a few will rhyme off a list of search engines and want well placed at the top of 200 of them.

It is time to separate fact from fiction. Yes, your SEO consultant can give you a top-ten placement at Google. But

1. If the placement is for “dirty brown shoes”, it will probably not help your shoe store one bit, even if I tell you first hand. Few people are actually searching on the term.

2. Number ten perhaps not much either, depending on the term. People in search of “Essential Nectar liquid vitamins”, will probably click on the first result they see, or at least on one of the “above-the-fold” results that do not require scrolling. On the other hand, someone searching for “liquid vitamins” might check through two pages of results to become familiar with the available options.

3. If your title tag reads like a cheap list of search terms, it will not be attractive. For example, if it reads: “vitamins, liquid vitamins, multivitamins, multi-vitamins”, you can skip over it in favor of the next result that reads “Liquid Liquid vitamins of vitamin supplements Store.”

4. If your description tag is a mess, people will more likely skip over your list, even if it does rank number one, in favor of one that resembles what they are looking for. Google and others use the description tag usually when the term is found in it, so be sure to include your key search terms in a description tag that actually reads well.

Lately, I have responded to a forum question, which goes something like this: My site ranks number one for this term at this engine. The term is sought on numerous occasions per day, and the engine, this percentage market. Can I expect this many visitors?

This is not an SEO challenge is a matter of mathematics: market research x = visitors

I answered with a little outweigh the factors that mathematics in the SEO game, including the site’s title tag and the description tag, as well as whether the term lends itself to scrolling. I also pointed out that it depends on the title tags and description tags of the competition, too.

Another factor that makes it difficult to forecast traffic is the abandonment factor - how many people click on none of the results because they get interrupted or confused, or abandon the search for a new because they find themselves off - topic or searching too broadly.

It also depends on how many listings there are and how they are marked. Often, Yahoo and Lycos, for example, there are so many ads that the average user may never scroll a screen or two to see the organic (natural) results.

And, of course, it also depends on the color of the walls in the room since the user clicks, the weather outside and how well they slept last night. But there is little you can do about it.

What you can do is to work with your Seo Services consultant to choose the search terms are most effective for your business and make sure he develops a title tag and the description tag that sell to both humans and motors Research. Then, make sure it is not only followed the rankings of your key search terms, but also the description used by each of the search engines.

A good ranking in Google and Yahoo is just one measure of your success SEO consultant. A more complete evaluation is that he is your partner in building long-term, targeted traffic.

How Real SEO Analysis Works

Posted on March 16th, 2009 in SEO | Comments Off

SEO
Michael Murray, Vp Of Fathom Seo asked:

If you’re serious about SEO, you need to know how to analyze the information you uncover.

A decade ago, businesses were wondering whether they need to be part of the Internet. By the late 1990s, plenty signed up and did the basics like placing keywords in the META data.

Unfortunately, that’s all some companies do - pick out keywords that may or may not be appropriate and pack them into the META keyword data set that search engines pretty much ignore.

Proper analysis requires sound thinking and judgment in many areas. We’ll focus on two major ones - Top 300 and page caching.

Top 300 What’s the Top 300? It doesn’t sound too valuable unless your biggest customer of the last 10 years actually traveled that deep into the depths of search engine information overload.

Actually, any number will do depending on your interest. Start with your 10 favorite search terms (or carefully targeted search terms). To track your growth, think big. If you’re ranking No. 292 one week and then a week later, you’re No. 154, you know you’re on the right track.

Too many SEO managers make the mistake of tracking the Top 30 results and miss out on the wonderful fact that they’re already No. 31. Don’t be poorly informed.

Page Caching Google is the best for this because of how fast it continues to reindex pages. Create your own Google Cache Calendar - a Word or Excel document will do. List your strategic pages - say about 10 for starters. Apply the Top 300 rule, check your rankings and record the cache dates. Over time, those dates form patterns that can help you determine when Google will return next - enabling you to time your next set of SEO updates.

If you’re not in the Top 300, you can still get some perspective from the page cache analysis if you’re still planning to optimize a given page. It’s easy to find the page - if it’s in Google’s index. Just enter the URL as your search phrase or find some unique text from the page and search for that string of words with quotes on each end. Either will result in a top SEO ranking and you can grab the cache date.

The bottom line is that you need to track you’re progress before making changes to the strategic SEO pages

Marc Marseille asked:

Getting a high traffic website is directly tied into how easily accessible you are in the search engines. The search engines if managed correctly can turn your lackluster internet business into an overnight success. The problem that occurs when trying to get high rankings with the search engines is the competition that you will encounter for the same keywords. There are ways that you can top your competition even if several competitors are using the same keywords. The easiest and most effective way to conquer your competitors is to get more backlinks. If you are trying to find a way to increase your page rank, you will have to get thousands of backlinks. Today I will share with you some ways to generate thousands of backlinks to increase your page ranking.

The most common method of getting more backlinks to your website or blog is to research other similar websites that have high page ranks and solicit them for a reciprocal link. A reciprocal link is when you agree to add another marketer’s link on your website in return they will advertise your link. This method can be time consuming and very difficult because someone with a high page rank is usually not interested in a link exchange, especially from a lesser page rank website. If you still want to pursue this method you should send the website owner an email stating your interest in a reciprocal link and patiently wait for a response.

Forums are great sources to get thousands of backlinks. Forums are indexed by the search engines on a regular basis, so when you make a post to your favorite forum, it gets picked by the search engines. Make sure that when you sign up for a forum to leave your website or you business opportunities in your forum signature. The advantages of a creating a forum signature is, when someone clicks on a forum topic that was indexed by the search engines, they will have a direct link to your website from your forum signature. The more post you make to different topics, the more backlinks you will create to your website.

Writing articles on topics relating to your website and submitting your articles to article directories will also help to get more backlinks. The key to article writing is to write to write in a way that your audience understands; it doesn’t have to be very technical. Most newbie marketers get intimidated by this method, but it is actually one of the simplest and best producing methods you can use to get thousands of backlinks. The most popular article directories are Goarticles and Ezine articles. Before you submit your article, read their instructions carefully, they do have some guidelines that are mandatory.

Web 2.0 is the new wave that is taking the internet into the next generation of Advertising. The main ingredient of the Web 2.0 concept is social networking websites. Social networking sites are quickly becoming the most popular and effective way to get thousands of backlinks to your website. Basically Web 2.0 sites like Digg, Reddit, and Sphinn provide high pr backlinks to your website. Social networking sites are very Google friendly and you do not have to write a 500 word article to create a backlink. There are literally thousands of social networking and bookmarking sites popping up everyday. Internet marketers are taking advantage of the social marketing phenomenon by generating thousands of backlinks to their perspective sites. Currently there are bookmarking softwares that allow you post to hundreds social networking websites with just one click.

The next time you are thinking of bringing more visitors to your website or increasing your page rankings remember these methods. The internet changes everyday but core is always a constant, getting thousands of relevant backlinks to your website will always increase relevance with the search engines.
